10 MUST HAVES for Hurricane Season!

Hurricane season is no joke in Florida. Aside from your typical, case of water, flashlights and a gasoline tank, these are some other things you should always have during hurricane season.

  1. Batteries: People tend to buy flashlights and forget about stocking up on batteries. Don't fall short and make sure you have the most common batteries this season.

  2. Lanterns: There is nothing wrong with going back to the basics! A regular lantern, some matches can really help you get through hurricane season. Don't underestimate the power of an old-fashioned lantern. Having it as a backup to your flashlight can be a great option to be prepared for the worst.

  3. Rechargeable fans: There are many different types of fans. Some are rechargeable with electricity; some are solar, and others are battery operated. We Floridians know how hot it can get so it is extremely important to keep a fan in handy.

  4. Duct Tape: Many tend to forget about this and it's essential to always have duct tape in handy. Duct tape can be used for so many things and in many emergency cases. It can be used to seal gaps or cracks and can possibly stop water from entering.

  5. Trash Bags: Always have at least 10, heavy duty trash bags in handy. Trash Bags can be used for protecting large valuable items or can be used to collect debris after a hurricane.

  6. Non-perishable Foods: Stock up now on non-perishable foods like tuna, powered milk, chips, canned chicken, soups, corn, etc. It's also ideal to have peanut butter or a spread to add on crackers or bread in a case of a major emergency.

  7. CASH: Do NOT forget, if there is no electricity or power, one must have cash in hand for any transactions. You never know how long it can take to recover after a hurricane.

  8. Sandbags: In Florida, more specifically in Miami, we tend to flood easily. Many homes are prone to get flooded and there are a lot of "flood zones" across Miami-Dade alone. Make sure to have a couple sandbags in handy to prevent or slow the process of flooding. A couple sandbags can be the difference between a flood that can damage your house or save your house.

  9. Tarps: A lot of customers come to our store for tarps during hurricane season. Something that can cost $8 or more (depending on the size and material) can make or break whether you during hurricane season. Our suggestion, always have it handy. It's something economical, small and easy to store. Make sure to have tie wraps near and available too.

  10. ZIP LOCKS: It's so easy to forget this and it is so important. Whether it is for food purposes or to save/store important documents for getting wet, it's one of our essential items to have during hurricane season.

ALL these items can be found at La Caridad Hardware Store (excluding food).

We hope this helps you prepare for hurricane season. Hurricanes are unpredictable and no one can predict how damaging it can be or how long it'll take to recover from one. Please prepare ahead of time. Shortages and prices changes are happening weekly across the United States. We hope everyone stays safe this hurricane season!
